Lois Banner: Writing About Marilyn

On her blog today, Dr Lois Banner talks about writing Marilyn: The Passion and the Paradox, to be published in July.

“Never did I anticipate that a biography of Marilyn Monroe would take me ten years to complete.  But she is so complex, so fascinating, and so representative of women and yet so unique that she turned out to be the most difficult—and engaging—biographical subject I have ever investigated…Looking at her through a feminist lens; using the approaches to history and biography I had developed in writing my many books, I thought, would reveal subtleties in her that no one had yet seen.  Besides, the academic world regards Marilyn as a dunce.  I wanted to revise that estimation.”
